Pet Cremation, Aquamation & Memorial Terminology Glossary
Pet aftercare terminology can vary between veterinary hospitals and crematories. Use this reference guide—aligned with IAOPCC (International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories) standards—to understand every term clearly.
Private (Individual) Cremation
A cremation procedure in which only one companion animal is placed inside the cremation chamber. The chamber is thoroughly swept clean afterward, ensuring 100% of the cremated remains returned to the family belong exclusively to their pet.
Aquamation (Alkaline Hydrolysis / Water Cremation)
An eco-friendly, flame-free alternative to traditional fire cremation that uses a gentle flow of warm water (approx. 200°F) and 5% natural alkali salts to accelerate natural decomposition. It uses 90% less energy than flame cremation and returns 20%–25% more pure, cream-colored bone ash.
Partitioned (Semi-Private) Cremation
A cremation where two or more pets are placed in the same chamber simultaneously, separated by refractory bricks, trays, or physical space. While pets are kept in separate zones, families seeking zero possibility of co-mingling should specifically request truly Private Cremation.
Communal (Group) Cremation
Multiple pets are cremated together without physical partitions. Individual ashes are not returned to the owner; instead, the cremated remains are respectfully buried or scattered at a dedicated pet cemetery, memorial orchard, or private sanctuary.
Witnessed (Attended) Cremation
A scheduled service where pet parents are invited to a private farewell room at the crematory to spend final moments with their companion and witness their placement into the private cremation chamber, often receiving the ashes back the same day.
Cubic Inch (cu. in.) Urn Capacity
The standard volumetric measurement for cremation urns. Each 1 pound of healthy body weight requires approximately 1 cubic inch of interior urn volume.
Refractory / Stainless-Steel ID Tag
A heat-resistant metal disc engraved with a unique serial number assigned to your pet upon arrival. It remains inside the chamber during cremation and is sealed with the cremated remains to guarantee unbroken chain-of-custody verification.
